DTVCC SIMULATOR PROJECTS

The DTVCC Simulator Projects were developed by members of the EIA TDSS R4.3 DTVCC Working Group.

NOTE: This version of the Caption File WorkBench, Simulator and EIA 608 ro EIA 708 Conversion software (to be referred to in this clause as the "Software") is not compliant with any version of EIA-708 after May 1, 1998. This version of the Software is available only as a tool with which to create caption files that may be used by compatible editing, conversion and encoding software. The Software is supplied such that it may be modifiable for use in accordance with the policies of the EIA. This Internet page and its links are provided as a courtesy by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) and Avio-Systems for informational purposes only in regards to the version of EIA-708 as of May 1, 1998. Interested parties are referred to the EIA DTVCC Working Group for current versions of the EIA-708 specification and any associated, contemporary software. Avio Systems is maintaining this site only as a courtesy to the EIA until May 1, 2001, unless otherwise extended. Avio Systems shall not be held liable for any of the information provided, as that the user recognizes that it is out of date. Any uses of the information provided other than for informational purposes are at the user's expense, responsibility, and liability. In downloading the compressed project files from this website or any other website that has copied said downloadable files, the user agrees to indemnify Avio Systems from any costs incurred for such usage and implementation of the materials provided because the user recognizes the experimental nature of the material provided in that its purpose is to help develop and define the EIA-708
specification, and is therefore not an implementation of any final version of EIA-708.

DTVCC WorkBench

DTVCC CaptionFile WorkBench - May 1, 1998.

Download Self-extracting Compressed Executable (CCWORK.EXE),
of MS Visual C++ 1.52 Project & Executable.
4 MBytes.

The WorkBench is a utility to create and encode DTVCC Formatted
caption files. The WorkBench outputs DTVCC captions via a serial port
interface, or through a dedicated Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) interface.

Currently the WorkBench can encode (via a serial port interface) caption
files to the Grand Alliance Video Encoder at WHD-TV (HDTV Model
Station) in Washington, DC. The WorkBench will be upgraded to work with
other DTV Video Encoders as they become available.

The WorkBench also can interface to the DTVCC Simulator running on
the same PC through a Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) Interface. Or, it
can interface to the Simulator running on the same or separate PC through
the same serial interface as it does with the Grand Alliance Video Encoder.

This version has been enhanced under a project with the Electronic
Industries Association (EIA) to accept SMPTE time code input from an
Adrienne PC-VLTC TimeCode Reader, although the WorkBench will
emulate time code (through the PC's internal clock) without it.

DTVCC Simulator

DTVCC Receiver Simulator - May 1, 1998.

Download Self-extracting Compressed Executable (
CCSIM.EXE),
of MS Visual C++ 5.0 Project & Executable.
2 MBytes.

The Simulator is a utility to demonstrate the caption decoder display
capabilities of a DTV Television Receiver. A Television Receiver is emulated
within a MS Windows operating system window in either a 16:9 or 4:3 format.

The Simulator can accept DTVCC captions through a serial interface or through
a dedicated Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) interface with the DTVCC WorkBench.

This version has been enhanced under a project with the Electronic Industries
Association (EIA) to overlay DTVCC captions onto NTSC Video. An ATI
All-In-Wonder TV/Video/Graphics card is required to use this capability,
although the Simulator will emulate a blank 16:9 or 4:3 display screen without it.

EIA-608 to EIA-708 Real-Time Caption Conversion

Roll-Up Caption Converter - August 1, 1998.

Download Self-extracting Compressed Executable (
Real608to708_50.exe),
of MS Visual C++ 5.0 Project & Executable.
247 KBytes.

This project includes a utility to convert NTSC Roll-Up Captions to EIA-708
Roll-Up captions in real time. You may specify a serial input port (e.g. COM1)
that receives an NTSC (EIA-608) caption stream from any number of
real-time captioning systems that target their output to an encoder that accepts
EEG Smart Encoder commands and caption decoder captions. You may also
specify a serial output port (e.g. COM2) that is connected to the Closed-Caption
input port of a DTV Video Encoder (currently, the output protocol of this utility
is only configured for the Grand Alliance Video Encoder developed by Lucent
Technologies).

The utility automatically converts the incoming real-time EIA-608 captions to
EIA-708 captions. The main window displays the incoming and outgoing captions
in a split screen window.

The complete Visual C++ project is provided, including source code. The code
can be easily edited to accommodate other DTV Video Encoders as they become
available.

This project was developed for the Electronic Industries Association by Avio-Systems
with the intent of providing DTV encoder and receiver manufacturers, and caption providers
a tool for advancing the implementation of DTVCC captioning.

Documentation

DTVCC Simulator/WorkBench User's Manual - March 31, 1997.
